Biography

Catherine II ’s maternal uncle, Prince George Ludwig Holstein-Gottorp , died in 1763, leaving two sons: ten-year-old William Augustus and eight-year-old Peter Friedrich Ludwig.

Frederick Augustus I of Oldenburg took custody of his young nephew, who had lost his parents early, and later declared him his heir. His other curator was his cousin Catherine II. After completing a course in Switzerland and Italy, 18-year-old Peter Friedrich Ludwig arrived in Petersburg at the end of 1773. He managed to take part in the war against the Turks on the lower Danube, where he distinguished himself in the battle of Cahul .

In 1781, he married Princess Frederick of Württemberg , the sister of Empress Maria Feodorovna .

After the death in 1785 of Frederick Augustus , his son Peter Friedrich Wilhelm of Oldenburg was declared duke, but since he was incapacitated, Peter, his cousin, became regent with him.

After joining France (December 13, 1810) the North German lands, the duchy of Oldenburg was surrounded on all sides by French territory. Napoleon before the occupation of the Atlantic coast offered the duke as compensation for Erfurt , but the king advised the duke to agree to this proposal. On December 30, 1810, French troops invaded the duchy, and the prince of Oldenburg himself was deprived of the throne. Russia sent France a sharp note of protest.

The Dukes of Oldenburg regained their throne in 1813, after the Congress of Vienna . Peter chose the Oytinsky residence in the vicinity of Lübeck as his place of residence , and dreamed of turning it into "northern Weimar ". At his court lived and worked the poet Klopshtok , the artist Tischbein , composer K.M. Weber .
