Biography

Friedrich Wilhelm is the eldest son of the Duke of Saxe-Weimar Johann Wilhelm and Dorothea Susanna of Pfalz . When his father died in 1573, Friedrich Wilhelm was still too small, so regency was appointed; in order to isolate children from the influence of the mother, the elector of Saxony Augustus became regent. Friedrich Wilhelm came of age in 1583, but he was able to rule on his own only after the death of his guardian in 1586.

Meanwhile, the next elector of Saxony, Christian I , being a weak body and spirit, died in 1591 at the age of thirty. His son Christian II was still small at that time, and by the will of the late elector Friedrich Wilhelm became regent of the country, having received the title “Administrator of the Saxon Elector”. After moving to Torgau , he abandoned the affairs of Saxe-Weimar, and his younger brother Johann , who was introduced to the government according to the laws of the Ernestine line of the Vettins , began to dispose of him.

In 1601, Christian II came of age, the regency of Friedrich Wilhelm ended, and he returned to Weimar , however, due to his death the following year, he left no noticeable mark in the further history of his native duchy.
