Biography
Born in , Iowa, in 1910. In 1931 he graduated from the US Military Academy . In the 1930s he served in a number of aviation units. In September 1941, as a liaison officer, he took part in the first flight of the B-17 bomber from Hawaii to the Philippines along the route Midway - Wake - Port Moresby - Darwin - Clark Field . All participants of this flight were awarded the Cross of Merit of Merit .
In the first months of World War II, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he exercised aviation control over transport along the route Australia - Christmas Island - Canton (atoll) - Fiji - New Caledonia . In October 1942 he was transferred from the communications service and during 1942-1945 (except for the period from October 1943 to January 1944) was the chief of communications for the United States Air Force in the Pacific. For merits in World War II, Admiral Nimitz awarded him the Legion of Honor with oak leaves. Also, Blake was awarded the Air Medal from the US military.
In the 1940s-1950s, he held several positions in the Air Force related to scientific and technological developments, introduced many innovations in the US Air Force for global communications and navigation, including tropospheric communications schemes. In 1957-1959 he headed the US Air Force Intelligence Directorate . September 1, 1959 was appointed deputy commander in chief and chief of staff of the Joint Pacific Air Force Command with headquarters in the Hawaiian Islands.
From July 1, 1962 to June 1, 1965 he was director of the National Security Agency .
The US Air Force established a prize in honor of G. Blake. It is awarded to air traffic controllers and aerodrome services for actions in dangerous situations, due to which the danger to the aircraft in the air or during landing was eliminated.
