The Kingdom of Rarotonga ( Cook . Mātāmuatanga Rarotonga ) is named for the island of Rarotonga and was an independent kingdom founded with the help of the British in 1858. In 1888 it became a protectorate of the British Empire at its own request, and in 1893 the name of the protectorate was changed to the Cook Islands Federation .
