Flight Description

The first group flight of three spaceships: Soyuz-6 , Soyuz-7 , and Soyuz-8. For the first time in space , three manned spacecraft and seven astronauts appeared at once.

It was officially announced that the purpose of the flight is to test spacecraft systems, conduct maneuvers in orbit during a group flight, and also conduct scientific, technical and biomedical experiments.

In fact, the purpose of the flight was to dock the Soyuz-7 and Soyuz-8 spacecraft and transfer one cosmonaut from the Soyuz-7 spacecraft to Soyuz-8 and one in the opposite direction.

The astronauts of Soyuz-6 were supposed to be nearby (about 50 meters) and make a filming of the dock. However, due to the failure of the Igla electronic automatic docking system, docking did not take place. The ships were equipped only for automatic docking, manual docking, under the control of the astronauts, was impossible, since the astronauts did not have means for measuring the relative range and speed, not tied to the Igla system . An attempt to manually dock failed - the relative speed of the ships was too high, and had to urgently diverge.

  • Distance traveled: 3,317,000 km.
  • The number of turns around the Earth : 80.
  • Landing place: 145 km north of Karaganda .
