Biography

In the fall of 1714 in Moscow, he was enrolled in the School of Mathematical and Navigational Sciences , which was located in the Sukharev Tower .

In the 1720s, S. I. Chelyuskin served on the ships of the Baltic Fleet as a navigator, apprentice navigator and sub navigator. In 1733 - 1743 he participated in the Great Northern Expedition . In 1735-1736 he was a navigator on the double boat “ Yakutsk ” on the expedition of V.V. Pronchishchev . He kept diary entries of this expedition, kept a description of the open shore. In September 1736, due to illness and death, Pronchishchev took command of the ship and led him from Thaddeus Bay to the mouth of the Olenyok River. In December 1736, along with the surveyor Chekin, he returned to Yakutsk by the same route. In 1738-1739, after the repair of Yakutsk, he took part in the expedition of H.P. Laptev . In 1741 - 1742 he explored the western coast of the Taimyr Peninsula , the mouths of the Khatanga , Pyasina and Yenisei rivers, discovered the northernmost point of continental Eurasia , which was later named in his honor Cape Chelyuskin .

In the fall of 1742 he returned to Petersburg , where he was promoted to warrant officer and served in various positions in the Baltic Fleet . In 1746 he commanded the yacht " Princess Elizabeth " [1] . In 1751 he was promoted to lieutenant, after 3 years as captain-lieutenant. On December 18, 1756, with the rank of captain of the 3rd rank , retired.

The famous Russian scientist and researcher of the XIX century, academician Alexander Middendorf said about Chelyuskin as follows:

Chelyuskin, undoubtedly, is the crown of our sailors operating in that land ... instead of exhausting himself from being in the deep North, as all others were exhausted, in 1742 he marked the completeness of his active forces by the achievement of the most difficult, to which all attempts have so far been made in vain .

Researcher of the biography of Chelyuskin V.V. Bogdanov, writes:

The greatest probability of burial is in the village of Bosarevo, on the Oka River, near Aleksin.

The burial place of S. I. Chelyuskin is not exactly established [2] .
