Distribution and habitat

It is distributed almost throughout North America — in Alaska , in Canada , in the USA, up to the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico in the south, and Georgia in the southeast [4] . Squirrels inhabit various woodlands, including coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests. They can also be observed in suburban areas where there are plantations of large mature trees [5] .

Description

The length of the body is 28–35 cm; tail length is 9.5–15 cm. The fur color is very variable [5] . In different regions of their range, these proteins can have a variable color [5] , and also proteins change fur for winter and summer [3] [5] . Fur is usually brownish or olive red. In the summer, on the sides there is a black longitudinal strip that separates the belly and back. The fur on the belly is white or cream. The tail usually has a white border. White fur around the black eyes [5] .

Ecology

In the wild, red squirrels live up to seven years, but most die before they live to a year. Lead single and daytime life; active year round. Most active at dawn and afternoon. His lair is placed in old hollows of woodpeckers, wood voids or other small crevices. In the north of the range, red squirrels often spend winter in the underground system of tunnels. Proteins often migrate if the food supply in the living area decreases. Migrating, they often have to swim across reservoirs [5] .
