Life and work
Karl Köhl was born in the family of a locksmith and was educated as a professional brazier. He later works as a fabric designer for a weaving mill in St. Gallen . After the crisis in the textile industry that arose after the end of World War I, Karl Köhl, as the father of a large family (he had 11 children), was forced to look for a new, more promising place of residence and occupation. The artist moves to the south of Switzerland in the canton of Ticino , and settles in the small picturesque town of Gandria , where he creates genre scenes, landscapes and scenic views using the linocut technique. He was part of the group of artists of Ascona . The wife and children of C. Kähl sold his engravings in their own shop in Gandria.
In addition to the well-known woodcuts and linoleum engravings, partially painted by himself, K. Kael is also the author of oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures made of wood, stone and metal. Karl Kael is the father of the modern Swiss artist and sculptor Adam Kael .
