Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was a well-known specialist in theoretical physics , who is best known as the developer of general and special theories of relativity. He also made a great contribution to the development of statistical mechanics , especially the study of Brownian motion , the resolution of contradictions between the theory of heat capacity and experimental data, and established a connection between fluctuation and dissipation . Despite his reservations regarding interpretations, Einstein also made a significant contribution to quantum mechanics and, indirectly, quantum field theory (mainly due to his theoretical study of the photon ).

Einstein in 1921

The following chronology of Einstein's main scientific discoveries provides a context for his publications listed below and describes the main topics to which his work is devoted.

  • In 1905, Einstein developed a special theory of relativity , which reconciled Galileo's principle of relativity and the observed constancy of the speed of light (a paradox of 19th-century physics). Nowadays, the special theory of relativity is a fundamental principle of physics. Her contradictory intuition predictions that a moving clock is slower , that moving objects contract along the axis of motion , that the order of events is not absolute, have been experimentally confirmed. Its ratio E = mc² , which states that any substance containing energy proportional to its mass, was subsequently confirmed by the presence of a mass defect in the atomic nucleus . Based on the mass defect, it is possible to estimate the energy received during nuclear reactions , which is essential for both nuclear energy and nuclear weapons .
  • Also in 1905, Einstein developed the theory of Brownian motion in terms of fluctuations in the number of molecular collisions, which provided further confirmation that matter consists of atoms . A few weeks earlier, he derived the Einstein relation for diffusion , which was the first version of a more general fluctuation-dissipation theorem and gave a good estimate of the Avogadro Number .
  • As early as 1905, Einstein suggested the existence of a photon - an elementary particle associated with electromagnetic radiation , which became the basis of quantum mechanics . In 1909, Einstein showed that the photon has both momentum and energy , and that in this way electromagnetic radiation must possess, if Planck's formula is correct, the properties of both a wave and a particle. This was the forerunner of the principle of wave-particle duality .
  • In 1909 and 1911, Einstein developed the first quantum theory of heat capacity , summarizing the Planck formula. His theory resolved the nineteenth-century physics paradox associated with the fact that the heat capacity is often less than predicted by classical physics . His work was the first to demonstrate the fundamental nature for physics of the ratio E = hν found by Planck and to show that it relates not only to a completely black body .
  • From 1907 to 1915, Einstein developed the general theory of relativity - the classical theory of gravitational fields , which became the cornerstone of modern astrophysics and cosmology . The general theory of relativity is based on the idea that time and space dynamically interact with matter and energy , which led to the prediction of many amazing things : gravitational time dilation , entrainment of inertial reference systems , black holes , gravitational waves .
  • In 1917, Einstein published the idea of ​​what became known as the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller method of finding quantum-mechanical versions of classical systems. The simplest and most appropriate example of its application is the Bohr model of the atom , but this method also predicted the existence of more complex systems - such as the binuclear ions H2 + and HeH2 +.
  • In 1918, Einstein developed a general theory of the process, as a result of which atoms emit and absorb electromagnetic radiation, which was the basis of lasers ( stimulated emission ) and stimulated the development of modern quantum electrodynamics .
  • In 1924, together with Schathendranath Bose , Einstein developed the Bose – Einstein statistics and the Bose – Einstein condensate , which formed the basis for explaining superfluidity and superconductivity .
  • In 1935, together with Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen, Einstein described a thought experiment that later became known as the “ Einstein – Podolsky – Rosen paradox .” Based on this thought experiment, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen concluded that quantum theory was incomplete.
  • In the last thirty years of his life, Einstein investigated the question of whether various versions of a unified field theory of classical physics can be applied to situations where both electrodynamics , gravity , and, possibly, quantum mechanics are taken into account . However, his attempts were unsuccessful, since these theories were not confirmed by experimental observations.

The appendix was translated by Ernst G. Straus. A "third edition" was published in 1946 by Methuen (London), but it is identical except for a change in pagination. The true third, fourth and fifth editions appeared in 1950, 1953 and 1956, respectively. In the 3rd, Einstein added Appendix II on a generalized theory of gravitation, which was substantially revised for the fifth and final edition.
