Biography

Born in 1588 in the city of Lahn.

Antoine was the third of the five sons of a wealthy peasant and winemaker Isaac Lenin ( FR. Isaac Le Nain ). Together with his younger brothers he studied painting for several years, until he went to Paris . He remained in this city until the end of his life, occasionally visiting relatives in Lana, where he had possessions. In Paris, he joined the brothers and from 1629 he lived with them in the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés . The brothers owned a joint workshop, led by Antoine. In 1929 he was admitted to the guild of St. Luke [2] .

Together with Louis and Mathieu Antoine worked on the decoration of the famous chapel of the Young Virgin in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In 1648, he became one of the first members of the newly created Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture ( French Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture ).

He died suddenly on May 25, 1648 in Paris, two days after the death of his brother Louis. The artist's works are in many museums around the world, including the Detroit Institute of the Arts , the London National Gallery , De Young Museum ( San Francisco ).

The brothers did not always sign their works, and until now such works without authorship are difficult to personally attribute to one of them.
