Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and drummer Ryan Dusik founded Kara's Flowers in 1994 while still in high school. The band released their album We Like Digging? , then signed with Reprise Records and in 1994 released another album, The Fourth World . After the album was well received by the public, the group terminated the contract with the record label, and its members went to college.

In 2001, the group returned, adding James Valentine and changing its name to Maroon 5. [14] At that moment, Carmichael began to play keyboards, and keyboards became his main instrument in the group. The band then signed with J Records' subsidiary, Octone Records , and in June 2002 released their debut album as Maroon 5, Songs About Jane . The main single from this album, " Harder to Breathe ", received a powerful broadcast, which helped the album to debut from the sixth line of the Billboard 200 chart . [15] In 2004, the album went platinum and was called the “Sleeping Millennium Hit.” The group received a Grammy in the nomination Best New Artist . The next few years, Maroon 5 toured around the world in support of Songs About Jane and released two live recordings: 1.22.03 Acoustic (2004) and Live - Friday the 13th (2005). [16] In 2006, Dusik officially left Maroon 5 after severe injuries to his wrist and shoulder and was replaced by Matt Flynn. The band then recorded a second album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long , and released it in May 2007. [17] The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, and the lead single, “ Makes Me Wonder,” became the band's first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 .

In September 2010, Maroon 5 released its third studio album, Hands All Over , which was reissued in 2011 with the addition of the single “ Moves Like Jagger ” featuring Christina Aguilera . Although the original version of the album received mixed reviews, “Moves Like Jagger” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. On June 26, 2012, the band released their fourth album, Overexposed . All four singles were high on the Billboard Hot 100, including the second single, “ One More Night, ” which held first place for nine weeks. In 2012, keyboardist PJ Morton became an official member of the group, after receiving little success with his previous albums as an R&B artist. The addition of PJ Morton meant that for the first time in the Maroon 5 group there were six official members. In the same year, Phantom Planet's friend and longtime associate, Sam Farrar, bassist Phantom Planet joined Maroon 5 as a tour participant, where he played a variety of instruments (including guitar, drums and keyboards), was a backing vocalist, and also provided samples and other special effects. In May 2014, the band signed with Interscope Records and released their fifth studio album, V , on September 2. At the end of 2016, Farrar became an official member of the group. On November 3, 2017, the sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues , was released.

In total, over 75 million Maroon 5 records were sold, making the band one of the best-selling artists in the world. [18] [19] [20]

Group History

Kara's Flowers and the creation of Maroon 5 (1994-2001)

Adam Levine, Maroon 5

Adam Levin and Ryan Dusik were introduced by their mutual friend, Adam Salzman. Levin was 15 years old and Dusik 16. [21] Three of the five members of the group began playing together at 12 years old. The four original band members met while studying at the Brentwood EMH School in Los Angeles . [22] [23] While attending school, Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael joined Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusik to form the rock band Kara's Flowers. [24] The name was taken from a girl who went to the same school in which the group was formed. [23] In 1997, the group performed at a beach party in Malibu , and independent producer Tommy Allen, hearing their game, offered to become their manager and record an album with his partner, songwriter John De Nicola, who is known for his work on the film Dirty Dancing including the song “ (I've Had) The Time of My Life ”. Producer Rob Cavallo's management team heard a recording produced by Allen and DeNicola, which led Cavallo to offer them a deal with Reprise Records and re-record the album. [25] However, after the release of The Fourth World during the last year of Levin and Madden's high school, the band began to resemble the British pop of the 1960s. [23] Despite the high expectations from the band and the record company, their album was not to their liking, and the main single, “Soap Disco”, was a failure. [26] Levin said the failure of the album was “a huge disappointment” that nearly led to the band's breakup. [23] [27] About 5,000 copies of the album were sold, and the group was forgotten six months later in early 1998. [28]

Dusik and Madden attended college at the University of California , and Levin and Carmichael moved to the east coast to attend Five Towns College in Dicks Hills, Long Island , New York . [29] While Levin and Carmichael were in New York, they began to notice urban music surrounding them, and later their songs were influenced by style. [thirty]

The band returned to the music industry again in 2001. [27] Producer Tim Sommer signed them to an interim deal with MCA Records and produced three tracks in Los Angeles in mid-2001 with Mark Dearnley. Contrary to Sommer's advice, the MCA abandoned the band and these tracks were not released. The group put together a demo, which was rejected by several labels before falling into the hands of Octone Records leaders James Diener, Ben Berkman and David Boxenbaum. [27] In search of talent for the label, Berkman received many demos from the brother of a former colleague at Columbia Records , and the song that caught his attention was Sunday Morning , which he called a genius. [28] Berkman was surprised that the song belonged to Kara's Flowers, because its sound was significantly different from what he heard in Warner Brothers. [31]

Berkman encouraged Diner and Boxenbaum to fly to Los Angeles for Kara's Flowers concert in the Viper Room . [28] Berkman told HitQuarters about his belief that the group needed "a fifth member who will play the guitar, free the singer and become the star I will perceive." [28] Octone Records insisted on changing the name of the group so that it broke up with its pop past. [28] Also, the label began looking for a guitarist to replace Levin so that he could concentrate on playing as a frontman. James Valentine (Square band, Los Angeles) was hired. [27] Having joined the group, Valentine said: “I made friends with them, we kind of got close, it was very similar to the fact that I was cheating on my group, we had some kind of connection, but in the end I left another group to join them. ” [27]

Songs About Jane and Leaving Ryan Dusik's Band (2002-2006)

Meanwhile, when we started making the [ Songs About Jane ] album in 2001, and the time when the album reached the pinnacle of success in 2004, we stopped being starving musicians who wondered which future would lead to a wave of success beyond our very own. bold expectations.
- Ryan Dusik, drummer Maroon 5, who left the band in 2006 due to injuries to his shoulders and wrists, incessant due to constant touring. [32] [33]

James Valentine attended Berkeley College of Music with John Mayer in 1996, where they developed a friendship. In 2002, they again connected to the Mayer radio program. After Mayer heard their album, he was so impressed (in particular, “ This Love” , which became the album’s most successful release and opened the way for superstars to the group), he invited them to perform at the opening of his tour in early 2003. [23] The first single, " Harder to Breathe, " slowly began to put together a broadcast that spurred album sales. By March 2004, Songs About Jane had reached the top 20 on the Billboard 200 , and Harder to Breathe was number twentieth on the Billboard Hot 100 . The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 in September 2004, [34] 26 months after release. This was the longest time between the release of the album and its appearance in the top 10 since the time that SoundCloud results were included in the Billboard 200 in 1991. Over 10 million copies of the album have been sold worldwide. All this happened after the group “abandoned its post-grunge roots for the beloved pop-soul radio, even when they were doing hard rock . [35] In 2004, Meyer again invited the group to perform at the opening. [36] The next three The band toured almost non-stop for years and visited sixteen countries, at which time the band toured with Michelle Branch , Graham Colton and The Rolling Stones . [37] [38] Among the other artists that the band toured with were Gavin DeGro , [39] Matchbox Twenty , Sugar Ray , [40] Counting Crows , [41] Phantom Planet, [42] The Hives , [43] Dashboard Confessional , [44] Simon Dawes, [45] The Thrills , Thirsty Merc , Mark Broussard, The Donnas, The RedWest, Michael Tolcher and Guster. [46]

Sam Farrar said that Aliya ’s song “Are You That Somebody?” Influenced the group, in particular the song “Not Coming Home”. [23]

Songs About Jane made it to the first line of ARIA Charts ( Australia ), [47] while Harder to Breathe was in the top 20 on the US [48] and UK [47] charts and in the top 40 in Australia and New Zealand . [47] The album also came in first place in the UK. [47] The second single, “ This Love,” reached number five in the United States, [48] third in the UK and eighth in Australia. [47] The third single, “ She Will Be Loved, ” made it to the top 5 in the United States [48] and the United Kingdom and in first place in Australia. [47] The fourth single, “ Sunday Morning, ” hit the top 40 in the United States, [48] Great Britain and Australia. [47] Maroon 5 also performed at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia in 2005. Their performance included a cover version of Neil Young 's song “Rockin 'In The Free World,” which frontman Levin performed with one of his characters, and the final act with Stevie Wonder . [49] On May 13, 2005 in Santa Barbara , California , the group led the Honda Civic Tour . [50] On June 9, 2005, the band performed at the American Film Institute's award ceremony for film director George Lucas . Lucas personally chose Maroon 5 for this event, because at that time it was his favorite group of children. [51]

During a long tour, the drummer of the group, Ryan Dusik, suffered several injuries and as a result reached a state in which he could not play the drums. [22] [52] He several times took a respite from the tour, and each time they found a temporary replacement - however, in September 2006, Dusik officially left the group permanently. [33] Drummer Gavin DeGro and The B-52s Matt Flynn, taken a few months earlier as a temporary member, chose to stay with the band on an ongoing basis. [53]

It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2006-2008)

After an eight-month record in 2006, in March 2007, It Won't Be Soon Before Long released their second album via A & M / Octone Records . [54] According to Levin, the next album after Songs About Jane is “sexier and more serious,” [55] written under the influence of 80s artists such as Prince , Shabba Banks, Michael Jackson and Talking Heads . [56] In the Los Angeles Times, Anne Powers wrote that It Won't Be Soon Before Long is "an icy hot mix of electro-funk and blue-eyed soul that works with its ruthless vein with the confidence of James Bond ." [57] Prior to the release of the album, the single “ Makes Me Wonder ” was number one in iTunes. [55] Also, the album became the best-selling with over 50,000 pre-sales. [55] After the release, the album broke all iTunes sales records in a week, selling over 101,000 copies. [58] The first single, "Makes Me Wonder," first appeared on radio on March 27, 2007. The song appeared on line 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 , which is the lowest place among debut singles. In the first week of May, the single rose from number 84 to the top line, this is the biggest leap in the history of the chart. [59] “Makes Me Wonder” was also in first place on charts such as Hot Digital Songs , Pop 100 and Hot Dance Club Play . [60]

In support of the album, in early June 2007, the group performed on a “six-day club tour,” during which they visited small venues in Boston , San Francisco , Los Angeles , Minneapolis , Miami and New York . [61] The group also had a concert, which aired on MSN Music in mid-June. [62] On July 10, the group performed at the opening of The Police in Miami, [63] and the next day at Studio A in Miami, there was an acoustic performance. [64] During an It Won't Be Soon Before Long world tour in 2007, the group visited 28 cities in North America. The tour began in Detroit on September 29 and ended on November 10 in Las Vegas . [65] A special guest of the tour, The Hives , performed at every concert, while Sarah Barellis , Kevin Michael and Phantom Planet performed in separate parts. [66] The band toured with the Dashboard Confessional during their world tour on March 28, 2008, as well as OneRepublic , Brandy Carlisle, and Paradise Cuming. [67] The band also performed on the American Idol show with the songs “Makes Me Wonder” ( season 6 ) and “ If I Never See Your Face Again ” ( season 7 ). The album’s reissue included the song “ If I Never See Your Face Again ”, performed in a duet with Rihanna . Also, this song was included in the re-release of Rihanna's album Good Girl Gone Bad . The fifth single, "Goodnight Goodnight," was featured in an ad for The CW Fall 2008.

Hands All Over Album (2009—2011)

Levin said the band had reached its peak and could release another album before its breakup. [68] He explained: “I finally want to become a completely different person, because I don’t know if I want to do this in my 50s, 60s, like The Rolling Stones.” [69]

In 2009, the team went to Switzerland to record a new album with producer Robert Lang . [70] The album, entitled Hands All Over , was released on September 21, 2010. In the Billboard 200, the album debuted at second place, second only to Zac Brown Band You Get What You Give . [71] Despite such a high position on the chart, only 142,000 copies of the album were sold, which was not very good compared to the previous album It Won't Be Soon Before Long , which debuted on the first line with 429,000 copies sold. [72] The album received mixed reviews from music critics, although many praised the album for its production. The first single from the album, “ Misery, ” was released on June 22, 2010. From July 22 to September 24, 2011 the group toured with Train . [73]

On June 12, 2011, Hands All Over was reissued to include the summer hit “ Moves Like Jagger, ” recorded with Christina Aguilera . [74] [75] The song was performed live on the Voice show on June 21, 2011, and in September the song reached the first line of the Billboard Hot 100 chart . Frontman Levin also participated in the recording of the Gym Class Heroes song “ Stereo Hearts ”, which was fourth in the Billboard Hot 100. On September 8, 2011, Jesse Carmichael announced that the band was likely to start recording a new album within a year. [76] On October 1, 2011, the band performed at a Rock in Rio concert in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . [127] On June 8, 2019, Maroon 5 performed at the Summertime Ball festival, hosted by Capital Radio and hosted at Wembley Stadium in London . [128]

Musical style and influence

I think the classic Maroon 5 song is a minor, it also has a bit of funk , Niall Rogers style guitars, and the lyrics are probably about a broken heart. Therefore, minor, funk, and bitter sorrow is the formula of the song Maroon 5.
- James Valentine [129]

Adam Levin said: “Everything that is written, fulfilled, and gathered together comes from us. I think people would be surprised if they knew that we do everything on our own. We are a group that does its own business. We have no puppeteers. ” [130] However, an article about songwriter and producer Benny Blanco reveals that some of the songs, such as “Moves Like Jagger,” are a result of the band’s collaboration with professional authors and producers. [131] In the same article, Levin says: “It seems that [Benny Blanco] got Midas' characteristic - to gather the right people at the right time to create a musical moment. He is busy collaborating. He's so good at getting people to do better. ” [131]

Maroon 5 named Elita 5, Michael Jackson , The Police , Bee Gees , Justin Timberlake , Stevie Wonder , Tonic, Prince , Tupac Shakur and Marvin Gay as the performers influencing the music of the group. [132] [133] Adam Levine also listed Billy Joel . [49] Guitarist James Valentine said he was influenced by Patrick Matini , Bill Frisell, and John Scofield, as well as the rock band Queens of the Stone Age . [134] As a rule, in the songs of the group you can hear the sound of the guitar, often accompanied by a piano or synthesizer. The theme of love, mostly lost love, is the main theme of most of the group's songs. Songs like This Love , Makes Me Wonder and Misery have a more cynical tone, often expressing dissatisfaction with relationships, while their more soulful and emotional songs like She Will Be Loved and Never Gonna Leave This Bed ”expresses a desire for a romantic relationship. Makes Me Wonder has a secondary theme where Levin expresses his displeasure with the state of American politics and the Iraq war . [135]

The style of the group’s songs varies from album to album. Songs About Jane contains songs about Levin's ex-girlfriend, Jane Herman. In It Won't Be Soon Before Long , however, the songs are less personal, and the sound is more electronic using synthesizers, creating a retro feel. Hands All Over continues the theme of lost love along with songs about passion and was re-released in 2011 with the hit “Moves Like Jagger”, an electro-pop song that represents a sharp change in the sound of the group closer to the dance music. “We took risks with this song,” Levin said. - This is a bold statement. We haven’t had such songs yet. It was exciting to do something else, something new. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. ” [136] James Valentine called Overexposed "our most pop album, and we are not shy about it." [137] They also experimented on several albums with the sound of the new wave [138] [139] [140] and disco . [141] [142]
