History

The castle was ordered by Count Franz Ferdinand Kinski (1668–1741). The high position (he was then the highest chancellor of the Czech kingdom ) and the desire to confirm his high social status led to the construction of a new castle [2] .

The design of the castle was created by the architect Jan Santini (1677-1723) [2] . The architect received a good art education, which is improved in Italy . He studied atypical, complex (according to plans and forms) works of the famous Italian master Francesco Borromini and himself was inclined towards unusual planned solutions and rich architectural symbolism.

Construction

Plan of the castle of Charles Korun

Construction continued in the years 1721-1723 [2] . In practice, this was the last major construction of the architect who died in 1723. Jan Santini here also created an unusual sample of the castle with a complex layout. The center of the structure was a luxurious hall-rotunda, to which rectangular wings were attached along three axes. A small number of premises are compensated by a complex game of volumes — rotunda with a dome, roofs with fractures, and a rounded volume of the main staircase.

The atypical layout and departure from the usual elongated palaces with three risalits in the French manner evoked bewilderment and condemnation. The castle began to be considered the bliss of the owner, and even evidence of his stupidity. In 1723, Emperor Charles VI visited the castle, after which the Chancellor renamed the castle Karlova Koruna [2] .

In addition to the castle, a chapel was created, which was planned to be made the tomb of the Kinsky family . The chapel is perceived as a fairly independent object, little associated with the castle’s architecture, as is the ancient arbor - a park pavilion in the style of classicism . The buildings are surrounded by a landscape park. After the death of Jan Santini, architect Franz Maximilian Kanka worked in the estate [2] .

XX century

Until the XX century, the castle was not rebuilt. During World War II (in 1943), the building was damaged by a fire [2] , but the furniture was saved and transferred to other castles.

In 1968, the castle was transferred to the National Gallery. The restoration and repair of the castle continued for several years. The exhibition “Baroque in the Czech Republic” was opened in the castle premises [2] .

In 1992, the property and the castle of Charles Koruna were returned to the descendants of the Kinski family. The castle is now an exposition with a story about the representatives of the Kinski clan and the history of horse breeding in the town of Chlumets nad Tsidlina [1] [2] .
