Affected leaves turn bright red, curl and grow, the lesion may be partial or extend to the entire leaf plate.

Eight-spore asks, 17–40 × 9–17 μm in size, almost rectangular, the lower part may be slightly wider than the upper. Basal cells ( see Tafrin's article ) are absent.
Ascospores are rounded, 3-6 × 3-5 microns, can bud before exiting the asuka.
A typical host is Rhus copallina ; in Europe it affects tan sumy ( Rhus coriaria ). Taphrina purpurascens is described in North America and is common in Canada and the USA ; found in Europe in France , on the Apennine Peninsula and in the Crimea ; also known in south africa .
