Biography
Maria José was the fourth child and third daughter of King of Portugal Miguel I and his wife Adelaide Leuvenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg . Among her sisters were Maria Anna, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and Maria Anthony, Duchess of Parma . Her only brother is Miguel II, Duke of Braganza.
Maria José married on April 29, 1874, Karl-Theodor, Duke of Bavaria , younger brother of the Empress of Austria, Elizabeth , better known as Sissy.
The couple lived in Munich , where they founded an eye clinic, which exists to this day. Maria José died in 1943 at the age of 85 and is buried in Tegernsee Abbey.
