Taphrina filicina is a species of fungi of the genus Tafrina ( Taphrina ) of the Ascomycota division, a parasite of ferns from the families Thyroid ( Dryopteridaceae ) and Teliperis ( Thelypteridaceae ). Causes the appearance of galls on wai leaves.

Description
Gauls are brownish or yellow-brown, then blacken, 0.5-3 mm in size. Affected leaves are bent.
Mycelium intercellular.
The marsupial layer (" hymenia ") develops on the upper side of the leaves, less often on the lower.
Askeys are 4- or 8-spore, (18) 30–38 (46) × 6-10 microns in size, club-shaped, narrowed at the bottom, with a rounded apex. Basal cells ( see Tafrin's article ) are absent.
Ascospores are ellipsoidal, 3.5-6.5 × 2-3 microns.
Distribution and hosts
Taphrina filicina is common in Eurasia , is found in the British Isles , Germany , Denmark , Sweden , Poland , the European part of Russia , in Asia - in Georgia , the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Primorsky Territory of Russia, as well as in North America ( USA ).
It is found on the Carthusian thyroid ( Dryopteris carthusiana ) ( typical host ), as well as on the species of the genera Shchitovnik ( Dryopteris ), Kochedzhizhnik ( Athyrium ), Leptorumora ( Leptorumohra ), Fegopteris ( Phegopteris ).
In Russia, the Carthusian thyroid (in the European part - Novgorod and Smolensk regions) and the Amur thyroid ( Dryopteris amurensis ) (in the Far East) are striking. The fungus develops in June - July.

- Taphrina fusca ( synonym for Taphrina moriformis ) is known in the Mediterranean ( Apennine Peninsula , Balkan Peninsula ) and in the eastern United States, causing the appearance of brown-purple galls on various species of thyroid.
