Biography

Born on February 7, 1875 in the village of Ostamo (now Sudakovo).

From 1895 to 1898 he studied at the Sibelius Academy (teacher Martin Vegelius ). From 1899 to 1901, he was cultivated by Robert Fuchs in Vienna .

From 1901 to 1907 he taught at the Conservatory in Helsinki (from 1911 to 1936 - rector, since 1919 professor of the theory of music and composition).

In 1908-1911 he directed the Vyborg Symphony Orchestra, founded in Vyborg together with a music lover, pharmacist Karl Theofron Hällström: 1860-1917, an orchestra school (music school). In Vyborg, Melartin conducted Andante from Mahler’s Second Symphony, and this was the very first performance of Mahler’s music in Scandinavia. [5] In 1916, he sent his beloved student Ilmari Hannikainen (1892–1955), who later became a well-known bandmaster, to conduct concerts in Vyborg to study in St. Petersburg.

Among the students - X. Aaltoyl, S. Ranta, U. Klamy. The musical language of Melartin is inherent in national features, the influence of Edward Grieg , as well as modern Western European music, is noticeable. The most significant works of Melartin are works of small forms, among which about 300 songs and more than 400 piano pieces.

He was fond of art and literature.
