Behbekhan [1] [2] [3] ( pers. بهبهان ) is a city in the south-west of Iran , in the Khuzestan ostan . The administrative center of the shahrestan Behbekhan .

Geography
The city is located in the southeast of Khuzestan in the foothills of Zagros , at an altitude of 325 meters above sea level [4] . Behbehan is located approximately 160 kilometers southeast of Ahwaz , the provincial capital, and 240 kilometers northwest of Shiraz .
Climate
The climate of the city is characterized as tropical . The absolute maximum of air temperature is 50 ° C, the absolute minimum is 0 ° C [5] .
Population
As of 2006, the population was 99,204 people [6] ; the national composition is dominated by Persians and Lures .

History
A settlement on the site of modern Behbehan existed already in the days of the Elamite state . During the reign of the Sassanid dynasty , the city was known as Arrajān , whose ruins are located north of the city and cover an area of about 4 km². Actually the toponym Behbekhan appeared only in the XIV century .
Current status
In recent decades, modern neighborhoods have been erected in Behbehan: Chamanak, Shekhre-Nou, Du-l-feqari, Falakaye-Bide-Boland, and Pole-Kayem. About 60 mosques function in the city, where Shiites of the Jafarite Makhbaz , which make up the main population of Behbekhan, as well as an indoor bazaar, pray. There is a state library, seven higher educational institutions, two secondary vocational educational institutions, 17 secondary schools, 31 elementary schools [5] .
Attractions
Hayiz Village is located 22 km northeast of Behbekhan, at the foot of the Hayiz Mountains. The village is famous for its ancient history, the beginning of which dates back to the era of the Sassanid dynasty . Of the historical monuments, a stone fence on the ancient shah's road, as well as three mills, are preserved in it. The village is a place for climbing, as well as a place of pilgrimage to the tomb of Imamzade Mohammed [7] .
Heyrabad Caravanserai , also inscribed on Iran’s National Heritage List, is 25 km from Behbekhan. It was built of burnt brick and gypsum during the reign of Shah Soleiman Safi and originally had an area of 9943 square meters. The caravanserai consisted of a mosque, rooms for teachers, a kitchen, a bathhouse and a small market. At the moment, only the main school building with an area of 2500 square meters has been preserved.
At a distance of 40 km from Behbekhan is the tomb of imamzadeh Abazar, erected at the end of the XVIII century and decorated with stucco and tiles [8] .
The ruins of the Bokan bath, related to the era of the Sassanid rule, is located 10 km from Behbekhan [9] .
In 2006, the city museum was opened, consisting of archaeological and ethnographic departments. In the Main Hall, objects related to the customs of the local population (wedding and agricultural ceremonies) and traditional clothing are exhibited. In other rooms, a model of a traditional dwelling, women's jewelry, samples of writing and coins of various periods are exhibited [10] .
