Originally, when the cycle was conceived by the author as a trilogy, the title “Dance with Dragons” referred to the planned second book of the cycle, after “ Game of Thrones ”. “Dance with Dragons” and the previous book, “ Feast of Vultures ” (2005), was originally written as one volume; The increased volume of the book prompted Martin to separate part of the characters and storylines into a new, fifth book. For the most part, the narration goes parallel to the events of the previous book, but near the end some of the plotlines from Pir continue.

The novel was filmed as part of the fifth season of the television series " Game of Thrones ", along with the fourth book, as the events of the books " Feast of Vultures " and "Dance with Dragons" occur simultaneously, [1] although some chapters of such characters as Bran Stark, [2 ] [3] [4] [5] Dayenerys Targaryen, [4] [6] [7] [5] and Theon Greyjoy (The Stinker) , [2] [6] [8] were used in the fourth season of the television series " Game of Thrones ". Some chapters of such characters as Arya Stark , [9] [10] [11] Davos Seawort , [11] [12] Bran Stark, [10] Quentin Martell, [10] Barristan Selmi, [13] [14] Theon, [9] [10] [11] Victarion [15] and Asha Greijoi, [10] as well as Jaime [13] and Keevan Lannister, [11] [12] were used in the sixth season of the television series " Game of Thrones " because they were not filmed in the fourth and fifth seasons. [16] [17] [18]

In Russia, the rights to publish the novel were bought by AST, which released the first volume of the book (called “Dance with Dragons. Dreams and Dust”) in September 2012, the second volume (called “Dance with Dragons. Sparks over the ashes”) - in November of the same year.

Content

Features of composition

As in the previous books of the series, the narration in the novel is conducted from a third person, from the point of view of different characters, while there are several non-intersecting plot lines.

  • Almost all the events of "Dance" occur either in the North and the Wall, or in the eastern continent of Essos. The events of most of the book take place in parallel with the events of "Pir", but in the second half of the "Dance" catches up and overtakes the "Pir", talking about events that occurred after the end of the previous book. [nineteen]
  • In the first chapter of Samwell Tarley from “ Feast of Vultures ” [20] and in the second chapter of John Snow from “Dance with Dragons” [21] the description of John's conversation with Sam coincides (with the difference that the narration is conducted on behalf of different characters)
  • After chapter Jaime Lannister (in the Russian edition this chapter is in the book “Dance with Dragons - Part 2. Sparks over Ash”) the storyline of “Dance with Dragons” overtakes “ Feast of Vultures ” (2005).

Story

The events of "Dance with the Dragons" complement the events of the fourth volume of the saga, narrating the fate of the characters that were not in the " Pir Vulture ", and closer to the middle of the book, characters from "Pir" appear, and then the saga continues. There are several parallel chapters describing some of the events that were described in the "Peer", but from the point of view of another character. In addition, in the fifth volume, the situation in the struggle for the Iron Throne and power over the North is again exacerbated, where the Lannisters and Tyrells, respectively, are trying to repel the invasion of Aigon the Sixth Targaryen's troops (which may be both Daenerys' nephew and impostor) and in the North Stannis Baratheon plans to capture Winterfell.
