Ezzo was married to Matilda (c. 979-1025), daughter of Emperor Otto II . The imperial daughter was given a dowry corresponding to her position: Ezzo received numerous possessions, including Auelgau or Waldenburg in Sauerland, as well as the imperial land of Saalfeld and Orlagau, which belonged to the area southwest of Saalfeld to the mountain range. With the help of his castles, Tomburg at Reinbach (from 1000) and Michaelsberg at Siegburg, Ezzo controlled large trade routes, which caused his conflict with the Bishop of Cologne .
After the death of Otto III, he was one of the contenders for the imperial throne. Ezzo later confronted the emperor Henry , concluding an alliance with the hostile Bishop of Liège Notger and the Archbishop of Cologne Heribert . In the conflict of Henry with the Lorraine relatives of the Empress Kunigunda, Ezzo was also on the side of the opponents of the emperor. In 1012, Henry managed to make Ezzo his ally, guaranteeing him the inviolability of the imperial lands received as a dowry of Matilda. In addition, the emperor gave Ezzo castles near Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Saalfeld [2] .
In 1024, Ezzo and Matilda founded the Benedictine monastery Brauweiler ( German Abtei Brauweiler , located within Pulheim ), later both spouses were buried in this monastery.
