Electronic library catalog ( EBC ) - a set of software and hardware to support the activities of the library by ordering, cataloging, searching, issuing books, solving various problems of reporting and book provision for readers, etc. both in the local area network and through web-pairing.

From History
The first electronic library catalogs were simply a list of records of publications in one file , which already made it possible to speed up the search for the right book, newspaper, magazine.
The use of spreadsheets, and subsequently the DBMS (more or less widely since the 1960s) made it possible to divide such records into separate fields, such as title, author, publisher, year of publication, language, annotation, etc., which made it possible to specify more precisely search queries.
In the same years, the first experimental systems for network access to the catalog began to be created, but the first large systems of remote access to EBC were launched in the USA in 1975 (at the University of Ohio) and in 1978 (Public Library of Dallas) [1] . Since then, EBCs continued to develop both quantitatively and qualitatively.
For example, the development of trading technologies, in particular, the introduction of the use of a non-repeating bar code for each product, had an impact on the work of libraries. After all, the barcode can be used not only for the retail sale of books as goods, but also for each issue (acceptance) of the publication from the reader, interlibrary exchange, books re-listing, etc., which can significantly increase labor productivity. Older publications that have not yet been assigned a barcode when printing, of course, have to be supplied with new barcodes, for which the corresponding capabilities have been added to the typical systems for creating electronic components.
For the tasks of scientific research, where it is often necessary to deal with a huge and constantly replenished volume of data, more sophisticated and improved (compared with EBC for public (public) libraries) source search and selection systems have been developed. A notable influence on the further development of search engines in EBCs is now exerted by the achievements of search engines designed for Internet searches. In the future, with more accessible computing power, approaches of expert systems, etc. will be more widely used.
Transformation into ABIS
Currently, EBCs have in fact become powerful information systems for supporting libraries (ABIS) and perform a wide range of tasks.
Each user usually sees only a part of the EBC capabilities, depending on what tasks are solved by him using this catalog.
The user-reader is usually familiar through the web-interface with the actual library catalog in electronic form, which allows in a more convenient environment to quickly find and, possibly, order publications of interest.
Acquisition department employees use EBC programs to study book availability (for example, the educational process), order new publications, continue subscribing, cataloging and registering new receipts, and various types of reporting.
Employees of the extradition department maintain a card index of readers with the help of EBCs, receive and process orders for literature, library management solves their tasks, etc.
Typical composition of EBC software modules
Below is the composition of the EBC modules of one of the common software and hardware systems for creating and maintaining an electronic library catalog [2] .
- Administration;
- Acquisition + Order and registration of periodicals;
- Cataloging + Card index of articles;
- Reader's search
- Card reader (with support for bar coding);
- Book issuance (with support for bar coding);
- Electronic library of full-text resources;
- Book provision of the educational process;
- Barcode generator for printing (on A4);
- BookScan - creation of electronic versions of scanned books;
- Web-module for remote access to the electronic library.
The largest electronic library catalogs in the world.
- Yale University Orbis Directory
- The catalog of the Library of Congress is one of the largest in the world today, containing links to more than 12 million records: books, periodicals and continuing editions, maps, manuscripts and audio recordings.
- CAMEO Catalog of Carnegie Mellon University Libraries
- University of California Consolidated Library Directory — Reflects the aggregate collections of more than 20 libraries in one of the largest US university networks, including the Berkeley University Library (totaling more than 9,000,000 document titles).
- Harvard University's HOLLIS Directory — Reflects over 9 million book, manuscript, microfilm, card, photograph, slide, and other materials. A significant fund of Russian-language publications, especially in the old years.
- Catalog of the British Library - it reflects documents mainly from the 1975 edition of the main storage of the British Library.
- The World Digital Library (WDL) was developed by the working group of the Library of Congress with the assistance of many staff institutions from different countries, and the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Provides free access in many languages to manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, records, films, photographs, photographs and architectural drawings.
