The Confederation Building ( Eng. Édifice de la Confédération ) is a Gothic revival building in the center of Ottawa , the capital of Canada . Located west of the Houses of Parliament on the corner of Bank Street and Wellington Street , it is usually considered part of Parliament Hill .
Initially, the plot of land that now houses the Confederation Building and the Supreme Court of Canada was built up with residential buildings and shops. The government expropriated the site for the construction of government buildings. The building was designed by architect Clarence Burritt , and the construction lasted 4 years, from 1927 to 1931.
Initially, the building housed a number of government departments, of which the largest was the Department of Agriculture and Food Canada . Currently, the building houses both government offices and the offices of parliamentarians, primarily conservatives . The possibility of building up empty space between this building and the Justice Building is being discussed .
