Biography
Sophia Charlotte is the daughter of the Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kasselsky and his wife Maria Amalia Courland , daughter of the Duke of Courland, Jacob Kettler .
On January 2, 1704, in Kassel, Sofia Charlotte married Frederick William I of Mecklenburg . The marriage remained childless, as Friedrich Wilhelm had previously been infected and had a sexually transmitted disease.
After the death of the Duke, Sophia Charlotte lived in the Buttes Castle . Belonging to the reformed religion, she became in Lutheran Mecklenburg the patroness of the French reformed community. She founded the German Reformed Community in Butzow.
