Biography
Vsevolod Berezkin was born in 1899 in the city of Kovno (now Kaunas) into the family of a veterinarian. In 1918 he graduated from high school in Vologda , after which he voluntarily left to serve in the engineering troops of the newly-born Red Army . [1] [2]
Career Berezkin-hydrograph and hydrometeorologist began in 1920 , when, after the correspondence course of the two courses of the Mining Institute, Vsevolod took part in his first expedition - to the White Sea as part of Ubekoseverra. The expedition was engaged in hydrographic work there. [1] [2]
The next eight years, Vsevolod Alexandrovich continued his studies. So in 1922 they graduated from the Naval Hydrographic School, in 1924 - the geographical faculty of Leningrad State University , in 1931 - the postgraduate study of the same university, and in 1928 - the hydrographic faculty of the Naval Academy . [1] Also in 1928, Berezkin's first scientific work was published - “Tides on Novaya Zemlya”. [2]
Along with his studies, Vsevolod Berezkin took part in many expeditions to the seas of the Arctic Ocean . In 1922 he worked as a navigator on the Sokolitsa messenger ship, from 1923 to 1925 he worked as an employee on the research ship Murman of the Northern Hydrographic Expedition. In 1925, Vsevolod Alexandrovich took part in the Karsky expedition on the icebreaking steamer “ Malygin ”. [1] [2]
In the early 1930s , Vsevolod Alexandrovich defended his thesis in which, after analyzing the currents of the Kara Sea , he was able to predict the existence of the shallow water of Ushakov Island , which was discovered later in 1935. He became a doctor of geographical sciences in 1936 , the theme of his dissertation was "Greenland Sea and the Polar Pool." [2]
Until the end of the 1930s, Berezkin continued to take part in the Arctic voyages, including in the first through-passage of the Northern Sea Route from Leningrad to Vladivostok at the Fedor Litke ice cutter in 1934 , during the 1935 expedition of the icebreaker “ Sadko ”, which opened Ushakov Island, in the expedition of 1938 on the ice-cutter “Fedor Litke” and in 1940 on the “ Alexander Sibiryakov ”. Berezkin was engaged in teaching since 1931 , and in 1937 he became a professor and head of the department of hydrometeorology of the Naval Academy. In addition to her, Berezkin taught at Leningrad State University, Hydrometeorological Institute and the Arctic Institute . [1] In December 1933, he took part in an interdepartmental meeting in Leningrad, which is considered to be a reference point in the formation of polar hydrography [3] .
Since 1943, he worked as the head of the Maritime Administration and Deputy Head of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Soviet Union, but a year later, due to health problems, he was forced to leave this job, limiting himself to teaching and research activities. Vsevolod Aleksandrovich is the author of more than 60 scientific works, among which there are several monographs. [1] [2]
Vsevolod Berezkin died at the age of 46, in Leningrad [2] . The grave of a talented hydrometeorologist is located at the Smolensk Lutheran Cemetery [4] .
Awards
For his outstanding work, Vsevolod Aleksandrovich Berezkin was awarded four orders and two medals [5] . And in the 1950s , the Strait in the northern part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, which separates the island of La Ronsier from the Hoffmann and Becker Islands, was named in his honor. [1] [2]
