Features
The original solution is a liquid concentrate with a long shelf life. Immediately before use, it is diluted with water and not used again. Even an unused working solution should not be stored for more than a few minutes. All this makes the developer convenient and virtually eliminates processing defects due to the exhausted solution. The proportion of dilution can be adjusted by the basic characteristics of the developer, and at very low concentrations, simultaneously with the time of manifestation, sharpness properties increase.
The birthplace was produced for many decades by a factory in Fayingen an der Enz , and in 2008, after several resales, it became part of ADOX Fotowerke Bad Saarow. Therefore, at present (2017), the developer is sold under the name “Adonal”.
After the expiration of the patent, the recipe of the developer Rodinal was copied by many manufacturers under different names.
Basic properties
- Low veiling power
- High safety of the concentrated solution (without air access)
- The possibility of a wide variation of the properties of the developer by diluting it to different working concentrations.
- Applicability for both negative and positive processes in black and white photography.
Composition
At different times, various formulations and methods for the preparation of the Rodinal developer were published. In the domestic literature, one of the options is given by V. P. Mikulin under the name “ Para-aminophenol developer R-09 ” [2] .
