Biography

Wenceslas was born in 1137, probably in Prague . At the time of the death of his father, he was a child. He is not known about his young years; he probably lived in Hungary or Poland, and then on the territory of the Holy Roman Empire . In 1172, he, along with his older brother Oldrich, was received at the court of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa .

After Emperor Frederick I transferred the Czech throne to Sobeslav II , the elder brother of Wenceslas, in 1173, he and Oldrich were able to return to the Czech Republic. Sobeslav II allocated inheritance to his brothers in Moravia : Wenceslas received the Principality of Brno , and Oldrich - Olomouc . In 1174, Vaclav became co-ruler of his brother in Olomouc.

After the death of Oldzhikha in 1177, Wenceslas became the sovereign ruler of the Principality of Olomouc, however, he lost the destiny of Brno, captured by Znoyemsky Prince Konrad III Otoi .

In 1178, Sobeslav II lost the Czech throne, overthrown by Prince Bedřich (Frederick) . Konrad Ota decided to use this to join the Olomouc inheritance to his possessions. With the help of the Austrian Duke Leopold V, he besieged Olomouc, but did not succeed. Wenceslas supported Sobeslav II in the struggle for the Czech throne, but after Bedřich defeated Sobeslav II’s army near Prague with the help of Konrad Ota in 1179, Wenceslas had to flee to Hungary. Olomouc Bedřich gave his half-brother to Przemysl Otakar .

Sobeslav II died in 1180; Wenceslas inherited his claim to the Czech throne. He tried to take advantage of the rebellion of the Czech nobility against Bedřich, who in 1182 was overthrown from the throne by Konraom Otoi. In 1184, Vaclav returned to the Czech Republic, but with the help of Emperor Frederick I Bedrich in 1185 he was restored to the throne.

After the death of Bedřich in 1189, he was replaced by Conrad Ota, who had become at that time the Margrave of Moravia. Wenceslas quickly enough found a common language with Konrad, because they had common enemies - the Bedřich brothers. After the death of 1191, Konrad was replaced by the Czech nobility by Wenceslas. However, soon the bishop of Prague, Heinrich Bregetislav , spoke against him, turning to the new emperor Henry VI . As a result, the emperor for the promised reward of 6,000 hryvnias of silver in 1192 removed Wenceslas, replacing Przemysl Otakar [1] [2] . Vaclav was imprisoned and soon died.

Married Wenceslas was not and did not leave children.
