“Moscow in the XXIII Century” or “Moscow of the Future” is a cycle of eight futuristic postcards of 1914 , made by an unknown artist by order of the Moscow confectionary factory “Einem” .
The pictures on the cards demonstrate how, in the author's opinion, Moscow was to look in the XXII and XXIII centuries : from 2114 (the Central Station card) to 2259 (the St. Petersburg Highway card). They depict such famous places as Red , Teatralnaya , Lubyanka Square , Petrovsky Park . It is noteworthy that on one of the cards was an image of the Central Station of Moscow , the creation of which was proposed for construction at the beginning of the 20th century , but later lost its relevance.
On the back of the card of each type was a brief annotation to the drawing; on card number 1 - to the entire series. Data about the author (or authors) of the drawings and text on the cards themselves and in the printed sources have not been preserved [1] .
The set was released in peacetime, a few months [1] before the outbreak of the First World War .
In 2010, the company " Red October ", which is the successor of Einem, re-released this series.

Winter is the same as when we were 200 years ago. The snow is the same white and cold. Central Station of the Earth and Airways of Communication. Tens of thousands of visitors and departures, everything goes extremely quickly, systematically and conveniently. Passengers are offered land and air. Those interested can move with the speed of telegrams
The Kremlin also adorns the ancient white stone and with golden domes is an enchanting spectacle. Immediately at the Moskvoretsky bridge, we see new huge buildings of trade enterprises, trusts, societies, syndicates, and so on. Against the sky, the cars of the overhead air line slide smoothly ...
Clear evening Lubyanka Square. Clear lines of luminous airplanes, airships and airway cars are drawing the blue of the sky. Long carriages of the Moscow Metro fly out from under the bridge square, which was only talked about in front of us in 1914. On the bridge over the Metropolitan we see a slender detachment of the valiant Russian army , which has retained its form since our times. In the blue air, we notice Einem, a commercial airship flying to Tula with a supply of chocolate for retail stores.
The lively, noisy shores of the large navigable Moscow River. Huge transport and trade cruisers and multistoried passenger steamers rush through the transparent deep waves of a wide trading port. The entire fleet of the world is exclusively commercial. Military abolished after the peace treaty in The Hague . In the noisy harbor, diverse costumes of all peoples of the globe are visible, because the Moscow River has become a world trading port.
We transfer mentally to Petrovsky Park. Alley extended beyond recognition. The ancient Petrovsky Palace was restored, and the Museum of the Peter the Great Age is concentrated in it. Everywhere they beat, glittering, marvelous fountains. Deprived of germs and dust, completely clean air cut through airships and airplanes. Crowds of people in bright costumes of the XXIII century enjoy the wondrous nature in the same place where we used to go, great-great-great-grandfathers
The Red Square. The noise of the wings, the ringing of trams, the horns of cyclists, car sirens, the crash of engines, the cries of the public. Minin and Pozharsky . Shadows of the airship. In the center is a policeman with a saber. Timid pedestrians flee to a frontal place . So it will be in 200 years
Beautiful clear winter 2259 year. A corner of the “old” merry Moscow, the ancient “ Yar ” still serves as a place of wide merry of Muscovites, as it was with us more than 300 years ago. For the convenience and enjoyment of the message, the St. Petersburg Highway has been entirely turned into a crystal-ice mirror, along which graceful snowmobiles fly, gliding. Immediately on the small aero slopes, the traditional sbitenschiki and sellers of hot aerojacks dangle . And in the 23rd century, Moscow is faithful to its customs.
Theatre square. The pace of life has increased a hundred times. Everywhere lightning movement of wheeled, winged, propeller and other vehicles. Mure and Merlise Trading House that existed back in 1846 has now grown to fabulous proportions, with its main departments connected to aerial railways. From under the pavement numerous engines fly out. Somewhere in the distance a fire. We see a car fire brigade that will stop disaster in a moment. On the fire, biplanes, monoplanes and a lot of airspace rush |
True Predictions
Architecture
- The building of the Detsky Mir store, built much later - with the USSR in 1957 , looks almost the same and is located in the same place as shown on the 1914 card [2] .
- The outlines of Lubyanka Square correspond to modern times [2] .
Technique
- The Lubyanka metro on a postcard is located in the same place where it was built much later, in 1935 [2] , only the modern station is of a closed type.
- After the construction of the Moscow Canal , the Volga-Baltic Waterway , the White Sea Canal , the Volga-Don Canal and the waterworks system on the Volga River, Moscow became a “port of five seas” capable of receiving river-sea vessels capable of reaching Black, Mediterranean, and Red , White, Baltic, Barents and North Seas. And on a four-deck cruise ship of the project 302 (type "Dmitry Furmanov") from Moscow from time to time you can make a direct trip to Turkey, Finland, Sweden and Estonia. In terms of displacement (almost 5,200 tons) this river giant is not much inferior to the ocean cruiser of the beginning of the 20th century (the legendary Varyag had a displacement of only 6,400 tons). It should be noted that large vessels do not get into the waters of the Moscow River, but end up on the Khimki Reservoir near the Northern River Station.
- "Airway" on the card - a monorail. Such a system appeared in Moscow at the beginning of the XXI century, though not a hanging scheme like on a postcard, but a reference one and does not take place in the area of Lubyanka Square, but in the area of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements and the Ostankino television center.
- Already in the 1930s, fire aviation appeared in Moscow: first light aircraft, and later (from the 1960s) - helicopters.
Facts
- The signature on the Lubyanskaya Ploshchad card is an example of the implicit commercial advertising of a manufacturing company now called product placement : In the blue air, we notice Erinem’s commercial airship flying to Tula with a supply of chocolate for retail stores.
- The modern building of the Federal Security Service on Lubyanskaya Square (the former building of the insurance company "Russia", architect Schusev) after several renovations has 9 floors; in the building depicted on the card, 11 floors.
- The snowmobiles depicted on the St. Petersburg Highway postcard are dangerous for pedestrians and other crews, since their screw is in the front (pulling) and is not protected by anything (there is no mesh protective cover ). The first right-hand snowmobile of the St. Petersburg Highway card is Rolls-Royce .
- The bridge across the Moscow River is similar in design to the now existing Crimean Bridge, built in 1936-1938. - on the postcard clearly visible central span, suspended on chains.
- In perspective, Red Square to the left of the building of the Historical Museum foresees the future of the parallelepiped building of the Intourist Hotel (built in 1969–1970, demolished in 2002).
- The artist did not guess on the postcard twice the height of the Bolshoi Theater about the building of the Central Department Store (the former store “Mure and Meriliz”); the building grew not in height, but in length, a new building was built in 1974 on the site of the former Golofteevsky and Aleksandrovsky passages, in 2007 it was expanded almost to the red line of the Kuznetsk bridge.
