Jan was the eldest son of the Prince of Mikulash V of Krnov from his first wife Margarita Klemnova from Elgut. When his father died in 1454, Jan was still small, and stepmother Barbara Rokenberg and uncle Vaclav II Ratsiborzhsky became (the rivals to each other) the principality. In 1456, Jan reached adulthood, and in the same year he shared his father’s inheritance with his younger brother Wenceslas ; Ian got Krnov and Wodzislaw Slaski .

In 1469, Jan supported the Czech king Jiri of Podebrad in his war against the Hungarian king Matthias Hunyadi . This step turned out to be fatal, since in 1474 the army of Matthias entered Silesia, and Jan fell into Hungarian captivity. It is not known exactly when Jan came out of captivity, but the price he had to pay for it was known: he had to transfer to Matthias half of the principality with the city of Krnov, which Matthias gave to his illegitimate son Janos . Only Wodzislaw remained with Jan, where he lived his life. He did not have a wife and children, and therefore, after his death, his land went to the crown. He was buried in the Dominican monastery in Raciborz .
