The European Poker Tour is the largest and most popular series of live poker tournaments that take place throughout Europe. A series of poker tournaments similar to the World Poker Tour (WPT) series , created by John Duffy , winner of the first Poker Million tournament. The series began in 2004 after the rise in popularity of Texas Hold'em around the world. The EPT is sponsored and partially owned by PokerStars and is recorded by Sunset + Vine for television broadcasting throughout Europe.
In seasons 1-3, the main difference between the two competing series was the amount of buy-ins for tournaments and its effect on the prize pool: buy-ins on the European poker tour were half as much compared to the World poker tour . Nevertheless, the prize winners of the first EPT tournaments were impressive enough to attract the attention of well-known poker professionals.
Starting from season 4 in 2007/2008, the buy-in for most EPT tournaments has been raised to € 8,000, due to the growing popularity of poker and the lack of casino venues participating in the series. Thus, at the 2007 exchange rate, the buy-in for EPT tournaments reached $ 10,000, which is roughly the standard buy-in for most WPT tournaments.
It is not surprising that by this time at the final tables of EPT tournaments one could meet poker stars such as Phil Ivey , Joe Hashem , Marcel Luske , Ram Vaswani and Patrick Antonius .
The next feature of the EPT is that the final table consists of 8 players, not 6, as in WPT.
In 2008, the first ever EPT Tournament in the Bahamas was dubbed “ PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.” This was the first tournament of the series outside of Europe.
Commentators on the first two seasons were John Duffy and Colin Murray . Starting in the middle of season 3, James Hartigan became the main commentator, and such famous players as Greg Reimer , Daniel Negreanu and Victoria Koren helped to cover the events. EPT television shows were first hosted by renowned British television presenter Caroline Flack (later teamed with Natalie Pinkham). In season 4 and 5, Kara Scott was the host. Michel Orp led the seasons 6 and 7. Starting from season 8, the show was presented by four different presenters: Christie Arnett, Sarah Grant, Laura Cornelius and Lynn Gilmarty, and James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton comment on the course of events on TV.
In order to draw attention to this competition for all poker fans, a series of online EPTlive Freeroll tournaments with a prize pool of $ 1,500 each is held for free. Such tournaments take place daily on the days of live EPT tournaments in the organizers poker room. In these promotional tournaments, thousands of novice poker players win real money for free.
In August 2016, it was announced that on January 1, 2017, the European Poker Tour would officially cease to exist. Starting in 2017, all offline PokerStars events will be distributed between the two largest series:
- PokerStars Championship (PokerStars Championship)
- PokerStars Festival (PokerStars Festival) [1]

The EPT Robbery in Berlin
On March 6, 2010, four men, dressed in masks and armed with knives and one pistol, broke into the Grand Hyatt Berlin , where the EPT tournament was held in Berlin, and robbed, stealing € 242,000. During the attack, no one was seriously injured, only one of the guards was slightly injured, trying to detain one of the robbers. The footage of the attack and the panic in the tournament hall were filmed on camera and posted on the Internet .
A few days later, the attackers, who managed to escape from the scene of the crime, were detained by the police and later sentenced to three years in prison. However, the stolen money has not yet been found.
