Biography
He was born in February 1768 in the village of Kato Grammatiko Pellas ( Greek Κάτω Γραμματικό Πέλλας ) in Macedonia and came from the ancient genus Manolea, whose descendants live to this day. He studied at the schools of Kozani and Thessaloniki , was a Hellenist and a supporter of Greek liberation.
During the period of church service, he was Metropolitan of Caesarea, later Beria (1799-1811).
On July 13, 1811, he was appointed Metropolitan of Serra .
On July 9, 1824, in connection with the deposition by the Turks of Patriarch Anfimy III , Metropolitan Chrysanthus was elected patriarch of Constantinople.
Being an educated and active man, but arrogant, power-hungry and vindictive, he gained many enemies. He was deposed by the Turks on September 26, 1826 and expelled to Caesarea , and later moved to a monastery on the island of Principo .
He died on September 10, 1834 and was buried on the island of Principo near Istanbul .
