Ama-gi is the Sumerian word ( ama-gi 4 , cuneiform 𒂼𒄄, also ama-ar-gi 4 ), meaning the liberation of slaves . Literally translated, it means “return to mother”, because the former slaves “returned to their mothers” (that is, they were freed). [1] Presumably, this is the first written expression of the concept of freedom . [2] [3]
The cuneiform spelling ama-gi was adopted as a symbol by several libertarian-oriented groups. The magazine of the largest libertarian student group in England , the Hayek Society at the London School of Economics , is called Ama-gi . [3] The symbol is used as a logo by the Political Institute of Liberty ( Spanish Instituto Politíco para la Libertad ) in Peru , [4] and another version of the logo is a trademark of Liberty Fund .
