The medal was established in 1928 as a state award and was intended to reward military personnel who voluntarily entered the Lithuanian Army during the Lithuanian independence wars 1918 - 1920 years .
In accordance with the Law on State Awards of the Republic of Lithuania Nr.IX-957 of June 18, 2003 , the Minister of Protection of the Territory of Lithuania awarded a medal.
Until November 13, 2003, the Medal of Volunteers-creators of the Lithuanian Army was the state award of the Republic of Lithuania .
