iPXE is free software for creating bootable ROMs for booting Linux and other operating systems on x86- based computers over a network using firewall protocols. iPXE was created in 2010 as a fork and a replacement for the gPXE project (Etherboot modifications), which had stopped at that time. [one]

iPXE can be downloaded in several ways:
- from storage media such as a floppy disk , USB drive or hard drive
- as a pseudo Linux kernel
- like ELF image
- using BIOS
- over a computer network like a PXE boot image
