" Atlantic 78 " is the code name for the maneuvers of the USSR Navy with the participation of more than 40 warships of the Northern , Black Sea and Double Banner Baltic Fleets, which began on July 17, 1978 and deployed in the North and Norwegian Seas and the Atlantic . The Atlantic exercises were one of the largest naval maneuvers in the late 70s, according to the annual USSR facts & figures [1] .
Summary
Following the maneuvers by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, S. G. Gorshkov stated that from now on the Soviet submarine fleet was in no way inferior to the American [1] . This was a response to the statement of the US Navy command, voiced in January of the same year, that the United States had superiority under water [2] .
