Stuart, Daniel (Brigadier General)

Daniel Stewart ( Eng. Daniel Stewart ; December 20, 1761 - May 27, 1829 ) - Brigadier General of the Georgian militia, who served during the US War of Independence and the War of 1812 . Fort Stewart and Stewart County are named after him. Great-grandfather accounts for US President Theodore Roosevelt .

Career

Daniel Stuart was born in 1761 in the territory of modern Liberty County . At five, he was left without a mother, who apparently died of malaria . Father, a military officer, died in 1776. In the same year, the fifteen-year-old Stuart enlisted in the militia , during the US War of Independence participated in unsuccessful attempts to drive the British out of Florida . In 1778, he was wounded at Charleston and was taken prisoner by the British, from where he fled. Hiding with relatives in South Carolina , Stuart met his future wife, Marta Pender, who died in childbirth a year after the wedding. At the end of the war he was promoted to the rank of colonel, commanded a cavalry brigade, and later - Georgia’s minuten .

After the war, Stuart founded the Cedar Hill plantation near the parental home, now owned by his stepmother. In 1785, he married a second time, to Sarah Suzanne Oswald, who bore him two children. From 1785 to 1787, Stuart was a member of the House of Representatives of Georgia, from 1795 to 1797 he was a sheriff of Liberty County, and from 1802 to 1811 he was elected to the state senate three times. In 1810, after the death of his second wife, he married for the third time, to Sarah Hain Lewis, who bore him two daughters.

In 1809, Stuart was promoted to the rank of brigadier general of the Georgian militia, and during the War of 1812 he commanded a cavalry brigade. After the war, he was an active member of a veteran organization, died in 1829 in Cedar Hill, and was buried in the cemetery of the Moodway Church. In 1915, by decision of the US Congress, a monument was erected to Generals Daniel Stuart and James Skreven at the cemetery.
