Unit 101 ( Hebrew יחידה 101 - Yechida 101 ) is an Israeli special armed detachment created to attack the bases of Arab terrorists, the first special unit in the Israeli army .

History
Unit 101 was created by the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Army M. McLef in August 1953 and existed until January 1954 when it joined the newly created separate 890th airborne battalion . The unit was headed by Ariel Sharon , who later became the first brigade commander.
One of the key conditions for the creation and existence of the unit was the need to be different and not look like IDF fighters, since the main allies of Israel, the United States and Great Britain, believed that the terrorists operating from Jordan and the Gaza Strip act independently of governments. Thus, unit soldiers did not wear the uniform of the Israeli army and insignia.
The unit consisted of about 40-50 fighters, personally selected by Sharon. During the service, special exercises were conducted on night sorties , the skills of secretive movement and attack from the most unexpected positions were improved.
Operations
Throughout its existence, Unit 101 has conducted a number of “retaliation operations.” The results of the operation in Kibia , carried out on October 14, 1953 after the terrorist attack in Yehud , became the reason for the disbandment of the unit.
