There are two possible origins of the name that fell into the Russian language: from the Hebrew obadyā ( abdiyāhu ) - literally a slave, a servant of God ; from the Greek audēis , meaning harmonious, speaking [2] . It is also assumed that the name came from the Church Slavonic language from Greek, and it, in turn, was borrowed from Jewish [4] .
It was brought to Russia along with Christianity from Byzantium in the form of Obadiah, but the form of Avdey was used in everyday speech. According to V. A. Nikonov, in the mid-1980s, the name was not used [3] .
On behalf of Avdey / Avdiy surnames were formed: Avdeev, Avdiev, Avdeenko [5] , as well as Avdeichev, Avdusin, Avdushev, Avdyukov, Avdyunin, Avdyunichev [6] .
