Biography
Reish was one of 669 Jewish [6] refugees rescued by Sir Nicholas Winton . His father was a lawyer. Reish arrived in England in 1938, barely knowing the English language, but tried to eradicate his foreign accent as quickly as possible [7] . After studying at Leighton Park School , until the end of the war he served in the Royal Air Force of Great Britain . His parents died in Auschwitz . After demobilization, he studied natural sciences at a college in and began writing for movie magazines, including Sight & Sound . In 1947, together with Lindsay Anderson and Gavin Lambert he became one of the founders of the magazine Sequence .
Reish had three sons from his first wife, Julia Koppard, with whom he later divorced [8] . In 1963, he married the ex-wife of Gene Kelly Betsy Blair , with whom he was until his death.
Career
Reish was one of the founders of the Free Cinema movement in British documentary cinema . His first documentary, “ Mommy Doesn’t Allow ” (1955), shot together with Tony Richardson , was included in February 1956 in the first Free Cinema program shown at the National Film Theater in specializing in screenings of independent foreign films. In his film “ We Are Lambet Boys ” (1958) [9] Rkysh realistically showed the life of a London youth club, including the leisure of working-class teens, which consisted of skiffle music, cigarettes, cricket , painting and discussion. This film represented Great Britain at the Venice Film Festival . About the same people and their club, the BBC made two sequels to the film, which were shown in 1985.
Reish's first feature film, " Saturday Night, Sunday Morning " (1960) was based on the socially realistic novel by Alan Sillitou , using the same techniques and techniques as in the director's early documentaries.
Reish was the producer of Anderson’s film “ Such a Sporting Life ” (1963) and directed the film “ Morgan: A Suitable Case for Therapy ” (1966) adapted by David Mercer from his 1962 television play. In 1968, the Isadora biopic about the famous dancer Isadora Duncan was released , in which Vanessa Redgrave played the main role. In the next decade, films like The Player (1974) and Who Stop the Rain (1978) were released.
The French Lieutenant 's Woman was perhaps the most successful of his last films. The script was written by Harold Pinter based on the novel by John Fowles , the main roles were played by Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep . The latest for Reish were the films “ Sweet Dreams ” (1985) about the great country performer Patsy Kline and “ Everything Wins ” (1990) based on the play by Arthur Miller .
He was the head of the British Film Institute . His textbook The Technique of Film Editing was first published in 1953.
