There are only 2 modern species in the subfamily - arapaima ( Arapaima gigas ), which is widespread in the Amazon basin , and heterotis ( Heterotis niloticus ), which lives in reservoirs of western Africa . Giant arapaima is the largest freshwater fish in South America and one of the largest freshwater bony fish in the world; its largest specimens reach a length of at least 390 cm (according to unconfirmed reports more than 450 cm) [1] . Heterotidinae lacks a mandibular antennae, and the rays of the gill membrane 10–11 ( Arapaima ) or 7–9 ( Heterotis ) [2] .
In the subfamily Heterotidinae there are 3 genera with 2 modern species [2] [1] [3] :
- .. Arapaima - Arapaims
- .. Arapaima gigas - Giant arapaima
- .. Heterotis - Heterotis
- .. Heterotis niloticus - Nile heterotis
- † Joffrichthys — Paleocene (65.5–55.4 Ma), North America [4]
- † Joffrichthys symmetropterus
- † Joffrichthys triangulpterus - Late Paleocene (56.8–55.4 Ma ago)
Some researchers distinguish the subfamily Heterotidinae into an independent family Arapaimatidae [1] .
