Adler was founded in 1880, in the early stages of its development, it produced bicycles and typewriters , and later it began producing motorcycles and cars.

Before World War I, the company used 2- and 4-cylinder De Dion engines, whose working volume varied from 1,032 to 9081 cm³. Starting from [1902, when Edmund Rumpler ( Edmund Rumpler ) became the technical director, the company also used its own production engines [1] . These cars, run by Erwin and Otto Kleier (sons of the founder of the company Heinrich Kleier) and Alfred Tevez, participated in a variety of car competitions. In the 1920s, Karl Irion raced Adler cars; then the popular engines were 4-cylinder with a volume of 2298 cm ³, 1550 cm ³, 4700 cm ³ and 6-cylinder with a volume of 2580 cm ³. Many standard models built between 1927 and 1934 had a body from Gropius and Neuss . They were put on 6-cylinder engine volume of 2916 cm ³ and 8-cylinder volume of 3887 cm ³. Standard became the first European car with hydraulic brakes, since 1926 it was equipped with the ATE-Lockheed system. From 1927 to 1929, Klerenor Stinnes ( him. Clärenore Stinnes ) traveled the world in a car Adler Standard 6 [2] .

In December 1930, Joseph Ganz ( himf. Josef Ganz ), who was also the editor-in-chief of Motor-Kritik magazine, became Adler’s chief engineer. In the first months of 1931, he created a prototype of a car with a tubular chassis, a centrally located engine and independent suspension, which is called Maikäfer (German May Beetle ) [3] . After the change of leadership Adler, Hans-Gustav Röhr ( Hans Gustav Röhr ) becomes the new director and the company focuses on the development of front-wheel drive.

In the 1930s, the company introduced the front-drive models Trumpf and Trumpf-Junior with 4-cylinder engines ranging from 995 to 1645 cm³. These cars participated in many races, including in Le Mans . Cars with engines Favorit (1943 cm ³), 6-cylinder Diplomat (2916 cm ³, 65 p / a, 48 kW, at 3800 rpm), 4-cylinder (1910 cm ³), 6-cylinder (2494 cm ³) and bodies from Ambi-Budd and Karmann were rear wheel drive. The latest car model was the Adler with a 6-cylinder 2.5-liter engine, 58 liters / s (43 kW) 1937. Thanks to the "streamlined" body, developed by Paul Yaraem ( it. Paul Jaray ), the car could accelerate to 125 km / h.

After World War II, the plant was destroyed and the production of passenger cars had to be forgotten. Production of motorcycles (in particular, the model MB 250S) resumed in 1949 and continued for the next eight years. As part of the reparations to the allies, new motorcycles were sold in the UK by BSA, and then Ariel under the names of Arrow and Leader . Adler returns to the roots and focuses on the production of office products. In 1957, the company merged with Trumpf-Adler and is part of Grundig , and later Olivetti and ceases its independent existence.

On the red cabriolet Adler Trumpf ride Trus, Balbes and Experienced in the comedy "The Caucasian Captive" . On Adler 2 Liter goes Michael (Boris Shcherbakov), the main character of the film “Ten years without the right of correspondence”. The typewriter "Adler" is mentioned in the work of I. Ilf I. E. Petrov "The Golden Calf"

An old typewriter “Adler” was bought at the market, in which

the letter “e” was missing, and it had to be replaced with the letter “e”.
