Shadegan [1] ( pers. شادگان ) - a city in the south-west of Iran , in the ostan of Khuzestan . The administrative center of the shahrestan Shadegan . As of 2006, the population was 48 642 people [2] .

Geography
The city is located in the south-west of Khuzestan, on the banks of the small Dorek river ( Karun basin), at an altitude of 14 meters above sea level [3] . Shadegan is located at a distance of about 70 kilometers south of Ahwaz , the administrative center of Ostan and at a distance of 50 kilometers northeast of Khorramshahr .
History
The city has become famous since the reign of the Sassanid dynasty [4] . In the Middle Ages, Shadegan served as a station for pilgrims from Fars and Kerman bound for Mecca .
