He was called up to the Red Army in 1943 and studied at the Kemerovo Military Infantry School [2] (according to other sources, at the regimental school in Kemerovo [3] ). Due to the difficult situation on the front, in August 1943 the cadets without assignment of the rank were sent to the army in the field. On September 4, 1943, the Red Army soldier Yershov became a rifleman of the 6th rifle company of the 2nd rifle battalion of the 212th guards rifle regiment of the 75th guards rifle division .

He especially distinguished himself when crossing the Dnieper River to the north of Kiev, in battles when the bridgehead was captured and held near the villages of Glebovka and Yasnogorodka ( Vyshgorodsky district, Kiev region ) on the right bank of the Dnieper in the autumn of 1943. In the award list, the commander of the 212th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 75th Guards Rifle Division of the Guards Colonel Borisov M.S. wrote [4] :

On September 23, 1943, Private Guard Yershov, as a part of Junior Lieutenant Yarzhin, first crossed the Dnieper River and first broke into the ship Nikolayev, where together with the platoon they captured the ship Nikolayev, a barge with military engineering property, a heavy machine gun, a mortar and two people from the crew team.

Participating in the battle for the village of Yasnogorodka, Private Guard Yershov showed courage, heroism and bravery, and destroyed up to 20 German soldiers and officers.

By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 17, 1943, for successfully crossing the Dnieper River north of Kiev, firmly fixing the bridgehead on the west bank of the Dnieper River and showing courage and heroism of the Red Army guard Alexey Ivanovich to the title of Hero of the Soviet Union awarding the Order of Lenin and Medal " Gold Star ” [5] .
