The river originates from Lake Itykul on the western slope of the Shapshalsky ridge and flows into Chulyshman 47 km to its mouth. The river is 72 km long. The Chulcha river basin is entirely located on the territory of the Ulagansky district of the Altai Republic, its area is 2350 kmΒ².
The Chulchi Valley is poorly studied and little visited by people. One of the constraining factors is that Chulcha is located on the territory of the Altai Reserve , which has category Ia - a strict natural reserve. But the main reason is the difficult pedestrian patency of the Chulchi valley - the riverbed passes through a mountainous region with hard rocks, weakly amenable to the erosive action of water, as a result of which the Chulchi valley is almost impenetrable V-shaped or U-shaped gorge [2] .
