Armored cruisers of the Etna type are a type of cruiser of the Italian fleet of the late 19th century . In the Italian fleet, they were classified as “ramming and torpedo ships” ( Italian: Ariete-torpediniere ). A total of 4 units were built. Etna ( Italian Etna ), Stromboli ( Italian Stromboli ), Vesuvio ( Italian Vesuvio ), Ettore Fieramosca ( Italian Ettore Fieramosca ). They became the Italian version of the cruiser Giovanni Bozan , designed and built for Italy by the British company Armstrong . According to their characteristics, they were noticeably inferior to the imported prototype .
