Biography

Born in 1828 in the family of a Uniate priest. Parents were of gentry descent. Received primary education at home.

In 1837 - 1843 he studied at the Zhirovichi Theological College (then at the Uniate Theological Seminary ).

In 1843 - 1849 he studied at the Minsk Theological Seminary . He graduated with honors, among the best graduates.

In 1849 - 1853 he studied at the Kiev Theological Academy . He graduated with a first master's degree (master of theology).

He was a bachelor ( 1853 - 61 ), an extraordinary professor ( 1861 - 62 ), an ordinary professor ( 1862 - 97 ) of the same academy, where he taught mainly courses in Russian history and the history of the Russian Church. In addition, he was a teacher of the French language (since 1857 ), the history of the Russian schism (since 1858 ).

Since 1863, he continuously headed the Department of History of the Russian Church of the Kiev Theological Academy. Since 1866 - Member of the Academy.

In 1873 he defended his thesis "Patriarch of Alexandria Meletius Pigas and his participation in the affairs of the Russian Church" (Kiev, 1872 ) for the degree of Doctor of Theology. Awarded the Makariev Prize .

I. I. Malyshevsky enjoyed great respect and popularity in the academic community:

He gave the final triumph of Russian, free, elegant and beautiful speech in the teaching of historical science at the Kiev Theological Academy. In his lectures, he was able to find and show completely new areas to his listeners, and, on the other hand, he presented them in such an original design, with such comparisons and explanations, in such skilful lighting that his lectures seemed something completely new, original , unexpected and therefore astounding .

He was a full and honorary member of the Kiev Society of the Chronicler Nestor [2] , the Moscow Archaeological Society , a member of the Russian Archaeological Institute in Constantinople , the Kiev Archaeological Commission, the Kiev branch of the Slavic Charity Society , the Kiev-Vladimir Brotherhood (for converting Jews to Orthodoxy), the Kiev Guardianship for the Blind and other societies. He took part in the construction of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev, and was subsequently elected an honorary headman .

He was elected to the vowels of the Kiev City Duma , in this position he cared for an increase in the number of public schools in Kiev and for a better structure of the existing ones.

In total, I. I. Malyshevsky was an honorary or full member of about twenty scientific and charitable societies and institutions.

January 11 (23), 1897 - the demise. He was buried at the Shchekavitsky cemetery of the Kiev Brotherhood Monastery .

Literary works

He is the author of a number of books and articles on the history of the Church (the first centuries of Christianity , the Byzantine period, the West Slavic and South Slavic churches, etc.), the problems of public education and church life in Russia. Published in the journal of the Kiev Theological Academy “ Sunday Reading ”. He took part in the publication of the works of St. Cyril of Turovsky ( 1879 ). For some time he was the editor of the journal “ Kiev Diocesan Vedomosti ”.
