Biography
Jacob Bigelow was born on February 27, 1787 [4] .
In 1810, he received a doctorate in medicine [4] .
Bigelow practiced medicine himself for a year without much financial success, and then began medical practice in Boston with Dr. James Jackson in 1811 [4] . This practice has been very successful [4] .
Since 1812, Jacob Bigelow lectured on botany at Harvard. [4]
Bigelow was also interested in mechanics. In 1829, his work Elements of Technology was published [4] .
He was president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1847 to 1863 and has been a member of this organization for 67 years [4] .
In addition to being a physician, professor, and botanist, Bigelow was also a poet [4] . In 1855, his work Eolopoesis, American Rejected Addresses [4] was anonymously published.
Jacob Bigelow died on January 10, 1879. [4]
