Career
From 1981 to 1986, Sugimori painted illustrations for the amateur magazine Game Freak , which was founded by Satoshi Tajiri [1] . Sugimori found the issue of the magazine in the doujinshi shop and decided to participate in the creation of its future issues [3] . Soon, he and Tajiri became best friends. Together with Tajiri they decided to make a Quinty game for Namco [4] . When Tajiri started Pocket Monsters Red and Green , Sugimori designed all 151 Pokémon as well as human characters [1] . Red and Green quickly gained popularity, and Sugimori began to create designs for anime based on games, as well as illustrations for a card game .
Creating pokemon designs, Sugimori led a team of several people, while Sugimori himself gave the designs a complete look. To be inspired, he went with the team to the zoo [5] . Sugimori also painted illustrations for manga , including the one that was distributed with pre-ordered copies of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness games [6] . Starting a new design, Sugimori first creates rough sketches, then with a tracing paper several times transfers them to other sheets of paper in order to give a more complete look. [7]
