Aseptic packaging

Aseptic juices

Aseptic packaging is currently the packaging technology in which the product and packaging are sterilized separately by various methods, and then the packaging is filled with the product and sealed under sterile conditions [1] . This prevents quick spoilage of the product and provides a long shelf life without the use of preservatives . The package consists of polyethylene, cardboard and aluminum, which protect the product in the package from damage, which is ensured by the high barrier properties of this combination of materials [2] . In 2007 alone, more than 170 million different types of aseptic packages were produced [2] .

Package Types

Aseptic packaging can be done using various methods:

  • chemical - in this case, various chemical compounds that kill microorganisms are used for sterilization [3] , more often it is hydrogen peroxide , sulfur dioxide , ozone , a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid [1] . Some of the chemicals used can negatively affect human health [3] ;
  • physical, which was developed at the American Institute of Food Technologies [3] , with this method, the product is gradually heated to high temperatures, and instantly cooled, pouring then into a sterile package [3] .

Dairy products may be packaged: milk, cream, liquid yogurt. Soy and dairy substitutes: soy drinks, drinks made from grains of rice and seeds. Soft drinks: juices, nectars and non-carbonated drinks, carbonated soft drinks, water. Wines and spirits. Food: soups and sauces, tomato products, olive oil and other liquid products [2] .

Aseptic packaging has several advantages over traditional glass packaging - it is more environmentally friendly, the production technology is simpler, less weight, the packaging does not break, it takes up less usable space during storage [4] .

Tetra Pak occupies 80% of the aseptic packaging market in the world, SIG owns about 15% of the market, and ELOPAK holds approximately 5% [2] .
