Biography
From a Catholic family, grew up in Reims . He studied at the Catholic Seminary of Philosophy and Theology, he accepted the priesthood (1944), but in 1952 he resigned. He continued to study philology. He studied at the Sorbonne, including Emile Braye . In 1949-1964 - in the CNRS , in this period is close to Jean-Pierre Vernant and Louis Dumont . In 1964-1985 - in EPHE . Since 1982, Professor of the Department of History of Hellenistic and Roman Thought Collège de France (initiated by Michel Foucault ), since 1991 Honorary Professor.
Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz , Academy of Sciences in Munich .
Prize of the French Academy for translations of Plotinus (1992), Grand Prize of the Academy of Philosophy (1999) and other awards.
Honorary Doctor of the University of Neuchatel , University of Laval ( Quebec ).
In June 2010, the International Seminar “Philosophy as a Spiritual Exercise and Lifestyle” in memory of Pierre Adot ( [1] )
Proceedings
Works on Neo-Platonism and Stoicism , based on translations and commentaries of the works of Plotinus , Simplicia , Maria Quizrin , Marcus Aurelius , St. Ambroise and others, with the active involvement of Eastern thought, analytical philosophy and existentialism , had a significant impact on French philosophy of the last third of the 20th century . (Foucault, Andre Comte-Sponville , Remi Brag , Michel Onfre, Luc Ferri, etc.). In the studies, Ado attaches particular importance to the principles, system, practices of education and self-education (“spiritual exercise”) in ancient societies and societies of the New Age. He understands philosophy as a way of life.
Ado's books have been translated into many languages, including Turkish.
