History

June 28, 1869 in the Wyoming Territory, an American army post was founded, which was called Camp Odger. In 1870, it was renamed Camp Brown, in honor of Captain Frederick Brown, who died on December 21, 1866 in a battle called Vetterman Massacre .

In 1878 the fort was again renamed, this time in honor of the leader of the eastern Shoshone Vashaki . Eastern Shoshone have always been at peace with white people, and their leader was on friendly terms with many officers of the American army. This is the only US military fort named after an Indian . The fort performed its functions until 1909 , when it was transferred to an Indian agency.

Fort Washaki is located within the Wind River Indian Reservation . In the vicinity of the fort are the graves of Vashaki and Sakagawei , a woman from the Northern Shoshone tribe , who helped the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804-1806 to explore vast lands in the American West [1] .
