Career
- 1989 - paramedic at the clinic of the Cheboksary Aggregate Plant [5]
- 1991 - surgeon of the surgical department of the Emergency Hospital.
- From 2002 to 2010 , he was the head doctor of the Municipal Health Institution “City Hospital No. 7”.
- From 2005 to 2010, he was a deputy of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies of the 4th convocation.
- In June 2010, he was appointed head physician of the Municipal Institution “ Novocheboksarskaya City Hospital” [4] .
- On October 10, 2010 he was elected a deputy of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies of the 5th convocation from constituency No. 10. He was a secretary of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies, a member of the standing commissions for city development, construction, architecture and land use; on social development and ecology.
- On October 19, 2010 he was elected the head of the city of Cheboksary - the chairman of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies.
- Chairman of the Board of the Council of Municipalities of the Chuvash Republic.
- On September 28, 2015, he was elected the head of the city of Cheboksary - the chairman of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies of the sixth convocation [4] .

- On October 4, 2016, at an extraordinary meeting of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies, Leonid Cherkesov resigned ahead of schedule as the head of the city of Cheboksary - chairman of the Cheboksary City Assembly of Deputies. Irina Vsevolodovna Klementyeva became the interim acting head of the city of Cheboksary - chairman of the Cheboksary city Assembly of Deputies [7] .

- April 13, 2018 was one of the initiators of bill No. 441399-7 "On measures to influence (counteract) on unfriendly actions of the United States of America and (or) other foreign states", in paragraph 15 of the second article of which it is proposed to introduce a ban or restriction of import into the territory of the Russian Federation medicines produced in the United States or other foreign countries [11] [12] . The bill was criticized by a number of public organizations, the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy [14] and the State Duma Committee on International Affairs [15] .

- He was awarded the medal of the All-Russian Public Organization of War and Military Veterans on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory.

Interesting Facts
On the initiative of the Mayor of Cheboksary Leonid Cherkesov at a meeting of the Presidium of the Cheboksary City Council of Deputies on November 30, 2015, a decision was made to unilaterally terminate the twinning agreement between Cheboksary and Turkish Antalya [16] .
